Week 1

Session 1: Introduction and Syllabus Review (Wednesday, 8/26)

Week 2

Session 2: History of Advertising, Part I (M-8/31)

* Read: Jay, Robert. The Trade Card in Nineteenth-Century America. Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 1987.  Read pages 61-98.

 

Session 3: Library Session I (W-9/2)

During this session you will learn how to locate and evaluate resources. We will also cover how to cite (using the MLA style). We will meet near the help desk on the 1st floor of the library.

 

During this session you will start doing some preliminary research for the (fourth) research paper.

 

* Find one trade card that fits one of the themes from the Jay reading. Write a paragraph about why you chose it in a word document. Insert the image(s) of the card into the word document. Submit through turnitin.com

Session 6: Library Session II (W-9/16)

We will meet near the help desk on the 1st floor of the library. Today’s topics include working with referencing systems, database searches, and the citation management system “Zotero.”

* Share 5 bibliographic items with our group through Zotero. Please only add items that others have not yet listed. (So the faster you do, this the easier it will be…): Zotero group link

Week 5

Session 7: Writing Workshop – Paper #1 (M-9/21)

During this workshop you will work on an outline of paper #1 in a small group of peers. You will read and comment on each other’s papers. Detailed instructions for this will be given to you along with the first assignment. Remember to keep all versions and notes for later.

The writing fellow will join us during the last 15 minutes of class.

* Work on your paper #1 outline (due next Monday!)
