Program Dates: May 17 – June 7, 2018
2018 Program Fee: $4900
This includes 6 Rhodes credits (4cr for Search 201, 2cr for German language or culture course), F1 and F11 Foundation completion, excursions and museum visits, all accommodations and most meals, classroom space, instruction by Rhodes professors, an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. Not included: airfare and 2meals/day in Berlin.
We will spend 2 weeks on the French-German border at the Europa-Academy Otzenhausen and 1 week in the vibrant and historic city of Berlin.
Students receive 4 credits for the 3rd semester of SEARCH and 2 credits for either German 100 or German 103. Students will thus receive F1 and F11 credit for the Maymester.
There are no language pre-requisites for the program.
In addition to classroom instruction, program highlights include multiple excursions, workshops and lectures, Rhodes-approved Search curriculum, accommodation in double rooms, and most meals.
Excursions while we are in Otzenhausen will include travel to the historic cities of Saarbrücken, Trier, and Schengen (Luxembourg), a working Benedictine monastery where students meet the monks who live there, two modern synagogues, Verdun battlefield and museum (France), a preserved 19th-century steelworks, among other exciting and historically significant sites.
In Berlin, students will visit the famous Holocaust memorial accompanied by a classroom discussion with a local historian, a walking tour of the old Jewish quarter of Berlin with a local expert, remnants of the Berlin wall, the German Historical Museum, a lively Turkish street market, examples of Bauhaus architecture, and much more.
Excursions and site visits are all integrated into the curriculum.
The program is specifically designed for students who have just completed their first year at Rhodes. More advanced students will be considered as space allows.
